BAFTA’s High Five for ‘Journey’ Vidgame

It nabs five honors for ThatGameCompany, set up by USC grads

LONDON — Vidgame “Journey” from ThatGameCompany, founded by USC graduates, was the big winner at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts’ 9th Games Awards on Tuesday night.

The adventure game, published by Sony, went into the evening with the most nominations and converted five of its eight nods into wins at the ceremony held at London’s Hilton Park Lane.

Journey” won for best online multiplayer, artistic achievement, audio achievement, design and original music.

But it missed out on the coveted best game prize, which went to stealth action adventure “Dishonored” from Gaul’s Arkane Studios, published by Bethesda Softworks.

Telltale Games’ “The Walking Dead,” based on the Robert Kirkman comic-book series that also inspired the AMC skein of the same name, received seven noms including best game, but only took home honors for story and best mobile-handheld game.

The inaugural best British award went to Fireproof Games’ puzzle adventure “The Room,” based on the cult 2003 film of the same name. Fireproof announced a sequel to the game on Feb. 19.

British journalist and scribe Danny Wallace was named best performer for his work on British puzzle game “Thomas was Alone.” Lead designer Mike Bithell announced last week that the game would be released in the spring on PlayStation3 and PlayStationVita following a strong reception on PC and Mac.

Giant Sparrow’s “The Unfinished Swan” nabbed best debut game and also picked up the prize for innovation.

As previously announced Gabe Newell, co-founder and managing director of development and online distrib company Valve was feted with a BAFTA Fellowship for his outstanding and exceptional creative contribution to the industry.
