Rihanna and Other Artists Who Play Israel Feel the Pressure

Twitter-based BDS Movement urges entertainers and others to stage anti-apartheid-like boycott

Pop star Rihanna has confirmed an Oct. 22 concert in Tel Aviv, a decision that has delighted her legions of Israeli fans but angered proponents of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, a global campaign calling for the use of political and economic pressure to compel Israel to withdraw from Palestinian land.

Known in the Twittersphere as #BDS, the movement has been gaining momentum since its inception in 2005, and has caused ripple effects across Israel’s academic, agricultural and manufacturing sectors. Its proponents, who consider Israel’s policies against Palestinians tantamount to apartheid, have pushed — with success — for Israel’s detractors to adopt a total refusal to purchase Israeli products, to target corporations and universities that do business with Israel, and to encourage governments to levy penalties against the Jewish state until it fully withdraws from the territories it captured in the 1967 Six-Day War and allow all Palestinian refugees the right of return to their pre-1948 homes.

Artists and entertainers have been drawn into the fray, with directors bowing out of film fests, musicians scrapping concerts and intellectuals refusing Israeli awards in a bid to avoid traveling to Jerusalem or Tel Aviv. In July, “Reluctant Fundamentalist” helmer Mira Nair spurned an invitation to bring her film to the Haifa Film Festival, writing on Twitter, “I will go to Israel when the walls come down … I will go to Israel when Apartheid is over … I stand with the (Palestinian Campaign) for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel and the larger Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Movement.”

Nair is one of the biggest names to bow to the pressure. While the BDS movement has gained global support, and nearly 14,000 users follow @BDSmovement on Twitter, the past few years have seen some of the world’s most prominent artists ignoring BDS’ pressure and even issuing statements condemning the injection of politics into their profession.

This past summer, Alice Walker wrote an open letter to songstress Alicia Keys, urging her to cancel a planned July 4 concert in Tel Aviv.

Keys nevertheless went ahead, with the singer explaining to the New York Times, “I look forward to my first visit to Israel. Music is a universal language that is meant to unify audiences in peace and love, and that is the spirit of our show.”

Online petitions and campaigns sometimes bordering on harassment are routine. Jon Bon Jovi, Elvis Costello and the Pixies have all nixed scheduled concerts after facing such intimidation, which appears in floods of Facebook messages, viral letters and tweets, and threats of blowback in the form of diminished ticket sales in other locations across the globe.

But when a truly big music act books a tour date in Tel Aviv, BDS has, so far, floundered. Triumphs for the Twitter counter-movement that calls itself #BDSFail have included 2012 sellouts by Madonna, Lady Gaga and Linkin Park, along with the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

As for Rihanna, her local promoters say the Holy Land performance is 100% on, and the star is being prepped for the expected media backlash that will no doubt accompany her when she steps onstage for 50,000 eager fans.

Wonder which side of the fence Ms. Debra Kamin sits on? I haven’t a shred of doubt. But why did Variety publish this piece by an obviously interested party? Surely someone “not directly in play” would have done a more objective piece. The article is biased in the extreme as noted by Mondoweiss. BDS simply asks artists and others to search their consciences and choose to make a statement thereto, or not. The facts of Israeli aggression (and accompanying HR abuses, including slo mo genocide of Palestinians altogether) are evident from any map. Americans need to wake up!

    • Ontogram – you have no idea what “genocide” is, if you really believe your own stupid accusation. The so-called “Palestinian” population has been steadily growing – which it would not, if Israel were really practicing genocide. Furthermore, you cheapen the word and belittle real acts of genocide, such as those carried out in Darfur, Rwanda, etc by misusing the word in the “Palestinian” context. Moreover – since when did “Palestinian” mean only Arabs, as you seem to think? Many of my Jewish older relations, who lived through WW2 in Eretz Yisrael, held Palestinian passports under the British Mandate. BTW – the Mandate for Palestine was specifically set up and entrusted to Britain, to create a JEWISH national home there. The original Palestine Mandate included the area now called Jordan – 77% of “Palestine” which was chopped up and used to create an Arab state. Jordan occupied the so-called “West Bank” for 19 years. None of you “fighters for Palestinian rights” were bothered about that, were you?

      • Ronnie says:

“The so-called Palestinian” is enough to understand your lurid racism against them. UN resolution 194 demonstrates you’re a liar, Israel is commiting a crime that the whole world condemn. Stop to think you’re “the chosen people” by god, you racisty hebrew eltist. Ah, forgot, the german nazists like hebrew believed they were a superior race, and indeed you’re doing to palestinians same things german nazists did to hebrews, homosexuals, Roma people.
Your mouth is a sewer of lies, your comment aiding and abetting a CRIME is the most disgusting thing.

  2. Rachamim Dwek says:

Omitted from this article was the oft stated premise of BDS. What the author describes as a demand that Israel withdraw from territories captured in 1967 and allow Palestinian Refugees to return to homes abandoned in 1948 is something much different.

BDS front man Omar Barghouti has repeatedly stated that BDS does not care about an Israeli withdrawl from territories captured in 1967. Indeed, he has also just as often stated that were that to take place it would not affect the BDS Campaign at all. Asked what the ultimate aim actually is, Barghouti has always stated that it is the total destruction of Israel. Asked for a rationale, both he and co-leader Judith Butler have repeatedly stated, “because it is Jewish.”

While this is the epitome of Anti Semitism, journalists like the author avoid that subject entirely and then whitewash the aims of the campaign. In fact, BDS has never made a withdrawal from the territories captured in 1967 part of its platform, nor used it in any campaign.

As disgusting as Anti Semitism is, whitewashing it is even more disgusting.

    • Ronnie says:

being against the crimes of Israel isn’t “anti-semitism”. By the way golda meir called the palestinians “Cockroaches”, so the whole world knew that israeli hebrews are racists. About 2500 times UN tried to stop Israeli continuous crimes against humanity. Stop to use “anti-semitism” excuse to justify the genocide of palestinian. I’m againsty the criminal nation Israel, I don’t even give a shit to religions, which I consider all bullshits for simples.

    • Mike says:

Do you think people are stupid? At least try to make it sound believable if you’re going to just make things up.

      • Ronnie says:

lejardin, that ” ‘rabs” define you as a racist. WHICH IS A CRIME. One committing a crime cannot give lesson to anyone, just go to jail for his crime.

      • lejardin says:

You’re an illiterate if you don’t already know this, Mikey. Just look up Barghouti on Wikipedia or anywhere else… he’s just like the rest of the ‘rabs.

  3. Marek Edelman says:

“Nair is one of the biggest names to bow to the pressure.”

How do you know that Nair was not speaking her conscience? Before Vanity Fair calls someone a moral coward, shouldn’t they have to some evidence? Like maybe Nair made pro-Israel statements in the past and because of a perceived threat to her income, she caved?

Otherwise, you are just engaged in a new style McCarthyism.

  4. Josey A. says:

As filmmaker Mark Birnbaum widely said, these people don’t hate Israel – they hate the Jews. Its the only nation in the world that someone can openly talk about boycotting, despite the fact that it’s a liberal democracy. Plain and simple anti-Semitism.

    • Ronnie says:

nobody hates hebrews living in the rest of the planet, this is the demonstration that saying “anti-semitism is an excuse to justify your crime against humanity, imbecile.

  5. Mark Kerr says:

This new video, reportedly originally commissioned for the NYT, offers a damning – and utterly shocking – indictment of escalating racism within Israel, directed not only at Palestinians but also at people from African countries: http://youtu.be/dPxv4Aff3IA.

It demonstrates clearly that this endemic racism is incited by Israel’s political leadership. The same political leadership quick to pose with foreign musical artistes playing gigs in Israel for PR shots intended to whitewash Israel’s constant and ongoing human rights abuses in Occupied Palestine and its discriminatory treatment of non-Jewish minorities within Israel.

I would urge any artiste currently considering playing a gig in Israel – and indeed anyone considering visiting Israel – to view this video.

    • Rachamim Dwek says:

While I admire you educating yourself via Youtube I would suggest that you also add Google Image to your “studies.” if you were to examine Israeli society you would evidently be suprised to learn that Israel is not a “white” nation. In fact, a fairly large number of Israeli Jews happen to have black skin. Are their racists in Israel? There are racists everywherw but at least in Israel, racism in action is a criminal offence.

Taking a highly edited propaganda video- and it was NOT produced by the NY Times- and claiming it represents an entire society shows only that you are a racist. Racists are people who judge an entire group by a handful of people. The saddest part? The video deals with illegal migrants and economic pressures placed upon the poorest people in Israel. Ignorance like yours only deflects attention away from a real and pressing issue. Bravo.

    • kaka roto says:

      f’u racist idiot!
here in Argentina government beats and even kill indigenous population (qom) and nobody incites to boicott this country. That is just one example. You and bds are just a racist grouop that threatens artists and intelectuals.

  6. Norman says:

Israel is a multi racial, multi cultural and multi religious nation. Hamas is committed to murdering Jews and destroying Israel and yet Israel supplies them with energy, food, medical treatment and other goods and people call this apartheid? The Palestinians in the west bank who work for Israelis get paid 4 times what Arabs pay them for similar work. There are Arabs who discriminate and would not allow Jews to live among them and they commit terrorist acts against Israelis. Israelis are also supplying medical aid to Syrian victims of the civil war. Israel is a Godsend to the Middle East and yet there are those evil masochistic individuals who wish to condemn and crucify Israelis for living in their ancestral homeland. There is nothing real in the name calling apartheid. Honest people can read through the lies of the evil anti Israel thugs who are the real culprits and spread death and destruction thru their venom as they foam at the mouth while Israel continues to be a world leader in fields such as medicine, agriculture and technology and help people enjoy a better quality of life.

I am a Christian. A man who wants peace and harmony in the the Holy land and in particular in my birth town Jerusalem. There are terrorists on all sides. The Zionist terrorist of who terrorized the Palestinians to flee for their safety and we’re never allowed back to their homes, are to this day, 60 plus years later, living in refugee camps or behind wall of shame and hatred. Simply because my ancestors decided to accept Jesus as the messiah, we are barred from living in our homeland by the racist policies of Israel. I yearn for tha day when we can live in peace as the children of Adam and Eve.

      • naila malik says:

Norman what are you trying to imply that kicking Palestinian out of there land and occupy then on top of that treat them like slaves kill them when ever you feel like attack them with there one of of the best militory force of the world killing women and chilldren, building 7-8 foot wall to imprisone them, destroy there olive fields, arrest children from the age of 7 to 13 putting them in prison without any charges is this the humain right(at the moment we are fighting for Harris Boys who are in prison without any charges not allowed to meet the family there are lot of cases like that)and you are talking about giving them jobs and paying them please wake up and get your facts right.these Zionist have not learn there lesson from 2nd world war they are treating Palestinian as Hitler treated jews.Mr Norman go and read more about the situation in Israel and Palestine, then give lecture about Palestinian people they are the Victom .

Norman….. I assume you collected your text from the Israeli embassy ?

      • EdderR says:

My friend without so many words I invite you to watch the following documentary consciousness

    • hollybynight says:

Hamas is not “committed to murdering Jews”. It has a charter which aims to re gain the territory stolen from them. Any oppressed people have the right to resist, this is recognized in the UN Charter. My own country (Ireland) had until recently 2 articles in its Constitution which claimed the territory of Northern Ireland. After peace talks and concessions this was removed. This is what Israel will have to do eventually. If they were confident about their right to the land they would be open and welcoming but they are not. They have to be aggressive because they know how fragile their myths are. Their “security” is all about their own nsecurity.

No country can invade an area by force and expect to have friendly neighbours, or nearby refugees who have been evicted from their own land. It is Israel which is committed to murdering, imprisoning (even children) and ethnically cleansing Palestinians to make way for rich settlers. Do you think this is right?

As for ancestral home, this is rubbish! No country can murder or ethnically cleanse human beings based on a MYTH? If I were to follow your example I should demand a part of the Vatican as I’m a catholic! Go back to where you came from and give the land back to the Palestinians, who in any case take better care of it, as they practice and have practised sustainable agriculture for centuries, and not built hundreds of huge, ugly settlements which destroy the environment and use scarce water for their swimming pools and lawns.

Isreal is not a democracy but a theocracy, a state based on religion just like hated Iran and Saudi Arabia. In my view all states should be secular, religion or lack of it is a private matter.

I know Israel is an emotional issue for Jews, but try to be less emotional and get information from diverse sources. Have you visited Hebron or Gaza? Have you seen the houses razed to the ground or the olive trees burnt by the settlers? Do you know how many Palestinians are in prison without trial? Try to look beyond the hasbara.

      • @Hollybynight: “If I were to follow your example I should demand a part of the Vatican as I’m a catholic!”

The two cases are completely different. This is the typical intellectual dishonesty of the Israel-haters.
Catholicism is a religion. It is not an ethnic group. Jews, on the other hand, are an ethnic group, a nation, that arose 4000 years ago and did, indeed, have a homeland, in the land which was conquered later by the Romans and renamed “Palestine”, in order to erase the Jewish connection. But the Jewish People did not forget their homeland and we have now returned to it. That is not stealing, and it is not land-grabbing. When the modern Zionist movement arose in the 19th century, the returning Jews BOUGHT land in Eretz Yisrael for exhorbitant sums from Arab landowners and often were forced to pay twice, once to the landowners and once to the fellaheen tenants of the land, who refused to move without payment. Even after that, Arabs attacked Jewish villages and made the Jews pay protection money – until the rise of the Hashomer Movement, who protected the Jewish settlements. The Arabs opposed peaceful Jewish settlement, even though, at that time, there was no intention to drive the Arabs out by force. If the Arabs had not attacked Israel in 1948, and again in 1967, there would have been no “Palestinian refugee problem”. The Arabs have clearly not learned that, “as you sow, so shall you reap.”

      • PAMinPA says:

        @hollybynight Very well stated! Facts!

  7. mavi marmara says:

Her conscience will make her pay a price. To sing in an Apartheid State as Israel being an afro-american woman is a shameful act. ¡¡FREE PALESTINE!!!

  8. Reality Check says:

Syria has killed 120,000 people just recently, yet these “peace activists” aren’t boycotting Syria
Egypt is killing its own people and throwing their government into prisons, yet no boycotts of Egypt
Hamas are insane. Yet Palestinians voted for them.
Hezbollah are insane, yet they control about half of Lebanon’s government.
Iraq? Insane. Yemen? Starving… and insane.
    Etc.
Israel? Best country in that area. So antisemites have… BDS.

    • Allona says:

Palestine has a mentality that belongs to the dark ages. Israel has a mentality that belonges to the 21st century. Israel has people of different races and religions that are all treated equally. Please explain how that is apartheid. Palestinian people still kill someone if they are gay, if a woman shows some hair or is seen talking to another man. Israel practices equal treatment of all its citizens.

      • Ronnie says:

another racist beliving hebrews are a “superior race”. But it’s hard to believe, as you all say same 3 or 4 lies like a bunch of parrots.

    • shedon says:

Israel is a state, one of almost 200 in the world. Why should it be singled out as being exempt from criticism?

I am able to criticize catholic countries such as Spain, Italy and Poland without being called anti-catholic. It follows that BDS is not antisemitic as it is criticizing the policies of a STATE, not a religion. In fact many Jews support BDS and are against the policies of the state of Israel or the dogma of zionism.

      • Another one making the false analogy with Catholicism. Catholicism is a religion. Spain, Italy and Poland are only “Catholic countries” in so far as Catholics form the largest religious group in each of these countries (at least, so it was, until the massive Muslim influx. I’m not sure how true that is now, especially in Italy). This is different to the situation in Israel, whose entire raison d’etre is to serve as a national home for the JEWISH PEOPLE. There is no such thing as a “Catholic people”. But there IS a Jewish People.

  9. The reason the right-wing corporate/military owned government in Israel gets away with murder is because everyone is so scared of being called an anti-Semite. I’m not anti-Semite; I’m anti-murder.

Support for Israel equals support for war crimes against Palestine. Stop Apartheid Israel. Free Gaza.

    -00-

    • Reality Check says:

If you want to free Gaza, tell Palestinians to get rid of Hamas, or tell Hamas to stop being insane terrorists who want to mass-murder the Jews.

If you’re against “apartheid” or “racism” you should go look at how minorities are treated in every single Muslim country on the planet. It’s a lot worse than Israeli minorities.

      Have a great day!

  10. This article reeks of bias. The author is practically cheering on these thugs who make death threats against 80 year old men in the name of their genocidal “cause.” How nauseating.

  11. It’s quite routine for these BDS thugs to get violent. Former Beatle Sir Paul Mcartney received death threats. So did Lady Gaga and Madonna. You have to understand that this is a pretty marginal cult following like the KKK. I suppose it’s just as well that VARIETY exposed them because harassing international entertainers has become their most visible shtick. Those on the receiving end of these kinds of threats should immediately be in touch with the FBI, Homeland Security or their local police.

  12. Reality Check says:

Egypt is a crazed jihadist mess.
Lebanon is a crazed jihadist mess.
Iraq is a crazed jihadist mess.
Syria is a crazed jihadist mess.
Yemen is a crazed jihadist mess.
    Palestinians elected crazed jihadists.
And the solution to all of this is… to discriminate against Israeli music fans?!??!?!?!
    LOL!

  13. Reality Check says:

Variety, you are awful for publishing this idiotic article that basically seems like nothing more than free publicity for a discriminatory hate movement.

Israeli music fans being discriminated against = helps solve the problem that Hamas terrorists, who won the Palestinian national elections, want to mass-murder Israeli Jews but are being prevented from accomplishing that? REALLY?

  14. Reality Check says:

Israeli Jews have been attacked LITERALLY THOUSANDS OF TIMES by the crazed jihadists who surround the country.

    So, Israel protects itself.

This makes antisemitic lunatics angry. So they form boycott movements against Israel, pretending it’s about “peace.”

  15. Reality Check says:

Why is Variety giving publicity to this antisemitic garbage?

This is just another “boycott the Jews” movement. It has nothing to do with peace or helping Palestinians. Discriminating against Israeli music fans isn’t going to change the fact that the Palestinians elected insane jihadist Hamas terrorists as their national leaders, and have spent decades trying to mass-murder the Jews, while Israel has fortunately managed to protect itself.

See Syria kill 120,000 people in just two years? That’s what BDS wants to happen to Israeli Jews

  16. justin says:

The Killers cancelled a huge Israel tour and gave back a 500k$ deposit. Pretty sure they are considered a “truly big music act”.

  17. BDS is about justice and reminding people that music doesn’t exist in a vacuum, separate from the society and world around it.

Israel is an Apartheid state that segregates people based on their identity and commits Ethnic Cleansing on a daily basis against Palestinians on the occupied territories and also its own Arab minority, planning to ethnically clean at least 40 000 Bedouins, Israeli citizens, from their Negev villages into townships described by Israeli NGOs as “garbage dumps”. Already existing townships have 70 % unemployment and lack basic services.

On the occupied territories Israel is concentrating Ethnic Cleansing at the moment on East Jerusalem and Jordan Valley, trying to force remaining Palestinian population out from this area comprising large part of West Bank and its most important agricultural areas. In the ongoing peace negotiatons Israel’s regime demands that it can control this area indefinitely. Occupation of Jordan Valley by Israel costs Palestinian economy 3.4 billion US dollars a year according to World Bank.

Telling facts to musicians about the state they plan to appear in is not harassment, its educating them about facts and reminding them that music is not separate from politics. If Israeli Jews still dislike of Wagner’s music because the Nazis liked promoted it, then they can have no complaints if advocates of human rights and freedom for Palestinians have a similar message to those who would be ready to appear in an Apartheid State.

    • Reality Check says:

No, BDS is about discrimination and bigotry against Israelis because Israelis don’t want to be blown up by the completely insane neighbors (see Syria, Hamas, Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad, etc)

    • Punishing someone because he or she happened to be born in Israel is “justice?”

If someone applied to you what you do to others how loudly would you be wailing?

    • Sam Kamin says:

Doesn’t apartheid mean “separation’? So why is it that when you walk around Israel, you will see all peoples – Jews, Arabs, Westerners, Easteners? Arabs and Jews go to the same malls, the same shops, the same health clinics, the same public restrooms, there is no separation. Even in the “settlement” town of Ariel, home of a growing university, 20% of the studtent population is Arab. This is apartheid? Are you sure you won’t be unhappy about having the Jewish state disappear?

      • Did you know that half the Palestinians in Gaza, in the refugee camps, in Rafah, are from Israel? That there is barbed wire stopping them and Jews ready to gun them down if they attempt to go home – or even just get close to the fence. That, my friend, is what the separation Israel so dearly depend on is all about. Establishing a country on somebody else’s land.

  18. Matt says:

BDS is a sham, a clever scheme set up by the Israelis themselves… In fact, Omar Barghouti, a BDS co-founder—who travels from campus to campus denouncing Israel as an apartheid state and opposing Palestinian-Israeli collaboration as “providing a fig leaf covering up Israel’s …crimes against the Palestinian people”—is himself enrolled as a graduate student in philosophy (ethics) at Tel Aviv University…courtesy of the Israeli taxpayers,,,,

    • Israel is an Apartheid state that segregates people based on their identity and commits Ethnic Cleansing on a daily basis against Palestinians on the occupied territories and also its own Arab minority, planning to ethnically clean at least 40 000 Bedouins, Israeli citizens, from their Negev villages into townships described by Israeli NGOs as “garbage dumps”. 19. lejardin says:

I want to see the BDS movement dead.

    • That’s the standard Zionist sentiment: If they don’t like about something, they want it dead. Even when its a child.

      • BDS is an ideology, not a person. And it should be dead. Just like similar ideologies like fascism, racism, and Arab nationalism.

      • lejardin says:

“Even when its a child.” :-0 :-0 :-0 :-0 With your hilarious, nay, side-splitting melodrama, your child-like hyper-sincerity, and your totally juvenile sense of drama, you’ve exposed yourself — I hope for your sake! — as a clueless adolescent in some clueless adolescent college. You have no knowledge of Israel, you’ve never set foot there, but wide-eyed and naïve as they come, you dutifully believe everything you’ve been told by your little friends on the left… because they’re your heroes.
