Murdoch’s News of the World Accused of Hacking Prince William’s Messages for Kate

Paper accused for first time of hacking someone directly related to British royals

LONDON — Rupert Murdoch’s News of the World newspaper allegedly hacked voicemail messages left by Prince William on the cell phone of Kate Middleton, a court in London was told Thursday.

The messages, which were left by William while he was at the military academy at Sandhurst, led to a series of exclusive stories for the paper, it was alleged by the prosecution in the trial of former execs at the paper.

It is the first time the tabloid, which Murdoch has shuttered, has been accused of intercepting voicemails of someone directly related to one of the royal family, according to the Guardian newspaper.

The News of the World’s former royal editor, Clive Goodman, and a private investigator used by the paper, Glenn Mulcaire, were both convicted of phone hacking in 2007.
