It’s a boy!
Moments before the announcement the Palace announced that it would be confirming the birth via an emailed press release, rather than the previously announced plans of confirming the birth of the baby on an easel in the Palace forecourt.
Traditionally, royal births have been announced via the easel board, including Prince William and Prince Harry.
According to reports on BSkyB, BBC and ITV, the baby boy was born by natural birth and Prince William is said to be “delighted” at the news.
The media watched as Ed Perkins, the press secretary to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, exited the hospital with the formal news of the birth to hand, which was then driven off to Buckingham Palace and placed on the easel for the formal announcement.
It said: “Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a son at 4.24pm today. Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well.”
Prince Charles also issued a statement following the news:
“Both I and my wife are overjoyed at the arrival of my first grandchild. It is an incredibly special moment for William and Catherine and we are so thrilled for them on the birth of their baby boy.
“Grandparenthood is a unique moment in anyone’s life, as countless kind people have told me in recent months, so I am enormously proud and happy to be a grandfather for the first time and we are eagerly looking forward to seeing the baby in the near future.”
A name is expected to be announced in due course.
