Blue Ant Media and Smithsonian Networks, a joint venture between Showtime Networks and the Smithsonian Institution, are partnering up to launch the Smithsonian Channel in Canada this fall.

The deal marks the channel’s first expansion into an international market. The HD channel will feature an assortment of exclusive content for broadcast, digital and mobile platforms.

“Our agreement with Smithsonian Channel allows one of the most unique U.S. television networks to provide the Canadian market with programming that we feel our viewers will really respond to,” said Michael MacMillan, CEO of Blue Ant Media. “This channel will be a significant addition to our premium high definition specialty television services as we continue to build a strong, independent media company.”

The Smithsonian’s award-winning programming includes genres focusing on air and space, science and nature, pop culture and history.

Blue Ant is a privately held integrated Canadian media company and as with it’s other premium channels, such as Oasis HD, HIFI and radX, the Smithsonian HD channel will remain commercial-free.
