Tim Gray to Lead Expansion of Variety’s Awards Coverage

Vet editor to enhance focus on all aspects of awards season

Variety is significantly expanding its focus on award season with the appointment of Tim Gray as awards editor.

Gray, the former Variety editor-in-chief who has covered the Academy Awards and other major awards events for more than 30 years, will lead the charge in Variety’s coverage of all aspects of awards season, from filmmaker profiles to events to behind-the-scenes look at campaigns and the competitive landscape among contenders for top film, TV and legit awards.

Jon Weisman, who was most recently Variety’s awards editor, has been promoted to senior editor, focusing on developing Spotlight features, including the Eye on the Oscars, Road to the Emmys and Contenders series.

“With Tim’s vast experience and expertise  in covering of all things Hollywood, we felt there was no one better suited to be our dedicated expert on the high-profile awards circuit,” said Claudia Eller, editor-in-chief, film, to whom Gray will report.

Gray, who has had a long and distinguished tenure at Variety, is the author of several books, most recently “Variety: The Illustrated History of the World from the Most Important Magazine in Hollywood,” published in 2012 by Rizzoli.
