Iron Man to Star in First Disney Theme Park Ride Based on a Marvel Property

New Marvel attraction will enable Hong Kong Disneyland to stand apart from the larger Shanghai Disneyland set to open in 2015

BUSAN — Already hugely popular in Asia, “Iron Man” will become the newest attraction at Hong Kong Disneyland — and the first ride at a Disney park to be based on a Marvel property.

When it opens in 2016, “The Iron Man Experience” will have guests take flight with Iron Man that pits the superhero against alien invaders in the streets and skies of Hong Kong. Ride will be similar to the revamped “Star Wars”-themed “Star Tours,” and be housed inside the Hong Kong park’s Tomorrowland.

Overall design will be themed around the Stark Expo (similar to the World’s Fair) and enable guests to see the progression of Tony Stark’s Iron Man suits and other Stark innovations.

Disney plans to use the new attraction as a way to make its Hong Kong park stand out as the company readies to open a new massive resort in Shanghai. The “Iron Man Experience” will essentially give Hong Kong bragging rights as a way to lure guests.

With the Disney’s Shanghai park set to open in 2015, there are concerns that the Disney units will compete with each other for visitors, especially mainland Chinese tourists. “The new Marvel-themed area will give guests visiting Hong Kong Disneyland even more reasons to visit,” said Andrew Kam, MD of Hong Kong Disneyland.

“Combined with Toy Story Land, Grizzly Gulch and Mystic Point, this new themed area underscores commitment to and confidence in the continued growth of Hong Kong Disneyland,” Staggs said.

But the attraction is also a sign of what’s to come from Disney as it continues to look for ways to partner with Marvel and integrate its characters into the Mouse House’s parks. In the U.S., it’s mainly offered up displays for upcoming movies like the upcoming “Thor: The Dark World,” and built play areas for kids on its cruise ships.

“Since Marvel became part of the Disney family, our Imagineers have been dreaming up new ways for our guests to experience their favorite Marvel characters and stories,” said Tom Staggs, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts.

The “Iron Man Experience” will also include a gift shop and photo opportunities to feature meet-and-greets with Iron Man, himself.

Hong Kong financial secretary John Tsang said in February that a new Marvel attraction would be added to Hong Kong Disneyland.
