USA kills ‘Political Animals’ ‘

Net ends series after disappointing summer run

There will be no more “Political Animals” roaming free at USA Network.

The NBCUniversal cabler had hoped the miniseries would perform well enough last summer that it could be spun off into a full-fledged drama series, but the project never received ratings traction, and USA has decided not to go forward with a series commitment.

Six-episode mini from Warner Horizon and Greg Berlanti launched on July 15 and, averaged only 3.2 million viewers each week, including live-plus-7 data, despite a heavy marketing campaign.

Sigourney Weaver starred as a U.S. secretary of state who lost the presidential race to a fellow Democrat but was considering another run. Other cast included Carla Gugino, James Wolk and Ciaran Hinds.

USA Network said in a statement: “We are proud of ‘Political Animals,’ our miniseries that attracted critical acclaim and impacted the cultural conversation this summer. It was a pleasure to work with Greg Berlanti and Laurence Mark and a powerful cast. We look forward to collaborating again with these talented creatives.”
