Sony, Televisa in co-production pact

First-look deal covers scripted, telenovela formats

Sony Pictures Television and Mexican media giant Televisa have inked a first-look co-production pact for scripted and telenovela formats.

SPT will get an exclusive first look at all Televisa’s formats for co-production worldwide, excluding the U.S. and Latin America. Televisa will get first choice on SPT scripted formats for co-production in Spain. Both companies will work on any program selected under the terms of the pact.

“We expect this to be a long and fruitful partnership,” said Andrea Wong, SPT prexy of international production, who said the deal had no time frame and that she expected it would expand in the future. “We’re open to strategic partnerships with other players, but we’re focusing on this new deal with Televisa for now,” she added.

“The successful scripts, diverse library and writing capabilities that Televisa offers to this alliance match perfectly with Sony’s experience in producing quality content for local markets,” said Jose Antonio Baston, Televisa’s prexy of TV and content.

SPT has spearheaded local-language adaptations for scripted series based on U.S. formats, including “Everybody Loves Raymond” in the Middle East, Russia, Poland and Israel; “Married…With Children” in Israel, Russia and Bulgaria; and “King of Queens” in Russia.

Televisa has a 14.5% stake in Spain’s Imagina, a joint venture between Globomedia, Spain’s largest producer of TV Fiction, and Mediapro, an integrated production service and sports rights brokering company in Spain.
