HBO orders ‘Missionary’ pilot

Aaron Paul circling to star in 1960s Berlin-era drama

HBO has ordered the pilot “The Missionary,” a Cold War spy thriller in which Aaron Paul is circling to star.

Pilot, about a young missionary who teams with the CIA in 1960s Berlin, was written by Charles Randolph, who will exec produce with HBO vets Steve Levinson, Mark Wahlberg and author Malcolm Gladwell.

HBO is currently looking to fill its drama pipeline. Despite a high-profile cast that included Ewan McGregor and Maggie Gyllenhaal, pay cabler decided not to go forward to series with “The Corrections,” and the Spike Lee project “Da Brick” got a no from HBO execs several months ago.

Net is readying for the launch of Aaron Sorkin’s “The Newsroom” on June 24 and began the fifth season of “True Blood” on Sunday. “Game of Thrones” recently ended its second season.

FX is also getting in to the spy game as Joe Weisberg’s pilot “The Americans,” starring Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys, is a hot project at the cabler.
