Gale Anne Hurd sets cable drama projects

Valhalla, Universal Cable Prods. field two for USA, one for History

Gale Anne Hurd is keeping busy with her pod deal at Universal Cable Prods. Hurd’s Valhalla Entertainment has set up three cable drama projects, two at USA Network and one at History.

“Southland” scribe Heather Zuhlke will pen and co-exec produce “Jane Wayne” for USA. Hourlong drama centers on a femme cop and her patrol sergeant husband who falls into a criminal conspiracy scandal.

Also set at USA is “Horizon,” with “Burn Notice’s” Bridget Tyler attached to write and co-exec produce. Sci-fi period drama follows a secretary at the FBI during World War II who believes her husband may have been killed in a battle with an alien spaceship in the South Pacific.

Valhalla and UCP have set “Reconstruction” at History, a period piece set during the post-Civil War era. Project centers on a Southern man’s struggle in his hometown after fighting in the war for the North. John Rice and Joe Batteer will pen and exec produce “Reconstruction.”

Valhalla, home of AMC’s monster hit “The Walking Dead,” pacted with UCP in April. Hurd exec produces all TV projects, which are shepherded by Stacey Levin, Valhalla’s veep of TV.

“It has been full speed ahead with UCP since the moment we started collaborating,” said Hurd, who praised UCP senior veeps of development and current programming Maira Suro and Richard Rothstein for shepherding the dramas to the cable nets. “Stacey Levin and I look forward to working with the talented executives at USA and History. I am a huge fan of the programming on both of the channels.”

UCP and Valhalla also are fielding a CIA assassin drama for NBC, “11th Commandment.”
