FX picks up trio of theatricals

'Mission,' 'Dragon,' 'Zoo' have basic cable home

FX has picked up basic cable rights to bigscreen pics “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol,” “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” and “We Bought a Zoo.”

The three pics, along with recent acquisitions “The Sitter,” “Puss in Boots,” “Real Steel,” “Immortals,” “Paranormal Activity 3” and “A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas,” are set to premiere in 2013-14.

Despite a lineup of original programming that continues to draw strong ratings — including “American Horror Story,” “Sons of Anarchy” and “Justified” — bigscreen acquisitions and syndicated comedies have been a major draw as well for the net, which saw a healthy double-digit increase in total viewers and several demos in 2011.

Primetime movies, in fact, posted a 21% bump compared to 2010.

“We landed 19 films that grossed more than $100 million, which was by far our best year ever,” said exec VP Chuck Saftler of the cabler’s 2011 pickups. “Our film library is deeper and more diverse than ever across all genres.”
