First project probes Monroe

CANNES — Havas-owned Upside Distribution is launching documentary label La Grandeur, which is kicking off with “Unclaimed Baggage: The Unrevealed Story of Marilyn Monroe’s Lost Wardrobe.”

Doc centers on a mysterious Louis Vuitton trunk sent to Monroe and left abandoned in New York for 40 years. Monroe-obsessed Japanese pop star Princess Tenko purchased the trunk at an auction and tapped one of her employees to trace it back to the sender to find out what happened. “Trunk” sheds light on Monroe’s relationships with ex-husband Arthur Miller, the Kennedys, the Strasbergs and the Vandebilts.

“Since it’s the 50th anniversary of Monroe’s death, we knew broadcasters would be flooded with documentaries about the American icon so we searched for an original and fresh angle and we stumbled on this strange and compelling story,” said Upside Distribution topper Christophe Bochnacki.

Budgeted at €450,000 ($580,000), “Baggage” has sold to ZDF in Germany, ERT in Grece, Channel One in Russia, and YLE in Norway. Upside is in advanced negotiations with U.K., Chinese, Italian and Austrian broadcasters.
