‘Boardwalk,’ ‘Downton’ vie for Monte Carlo prize

'Big Bang,' 'Modern Family,' '30 Rock' eye laffer kudos

PARIS Terrence Winter’s HBO gangster series, “Boardwalk Empire,” will face off against Julian Fellowes-scripted costume drama “Downton Abbey” (ITV/PBS) and 28 other TV drama skeins at the 52nd Monte Carlo TV Festival.

Other contenders in the drama category include HBO’s medieval fantasy skein “Game of Thrones,” CBS’s legal drama “The Good Wife” and Canal Plus’ edgy thriller “Braquo.”

Comedy nominees include eOne’s “Call Me Fitz,” Canal Plus’ “Kaboul Kitchen,” Channel 4’s “Fresh Meat” and U.S. shows “The Big Bang Theory,” “Modern Family” and “30 Rock.” The U.S. skeins were all pre-selected by the Producers’ Guild of America.

Each show will compete for four nods: international producer, European producer, actor and actress.

HBO’s “Game Change,” BBC’s “Berte and Dickie” and Barjac Prods.’ “Pour Djamila” are among 12 titles that will compete for best TV film.

Winners will be announced on June 14 during the closing ceremony. Rachel Bilson (“Hart of Dixie”), Rosanna Arquette, Ted Danson (“CSI”), Jennifer Morrison (“Once Upon a Time”) are among U.S. guests expected to attend.
