ABC orders ‘Nashville,’ ‘Americana’ pilots

Dramas from screenwriters Khouri, Seitzman

ABC ordered a pair of drama pilots Friday from screenwriters trying their hand at TV soap operas.

Callie Khouri, who was an Oscar for best original screenplay in 1992 for “Thelma & Louise,” is teaming with documentary filmmaker R.J. Cutler (“The September Issue”) on “Nashville,’ a family soap set against the backdrop of the Nashville music scene that follows one star at her peak and one on the rise.

Cutler will direct the pilot. Steve Buchanan of Gaylord Entertainment will also executive produce with Khouri and Cutler.

This pickup is contingent on closing the co-production deal between ABC Studios and Lionsgate.

In addition, Michael Seitzman (“North Country”) is writing and executive producing “Americana,” a soap set around a legendary fashion designer and his family and business, with Mark Gordon and Nicholas Pepper of Mark Gordon Co. and ABC Studios.
