Overworked Boneta now ‘Underemployed’

TV's Top 10: New Faces for Fall - Diego Boneta

It’s a year after college graduation and five talented friends find themselves not out changing the world but rather living the title of MTV’s “Underemployed.”

“I can’t tell you how many Twitter followers have been saying, ‘This is my life,’ ” says Diego Boneta, who saw the role of aspiring model Miles as an opportunity to escape his comfort zone and expand his acting chops.

“This was my first time playing the comedic relief, and it was liberating,” he says. “Miles isn’t so much the clown who comes up with the lines, but a hustler who is willing to do whatever it takes to get a job.”

That includes stripping for several older women during an office birthday party, along with other unusual scenarios.

With a growing body of work, the 21-year-old Boneta doesn’t find himself much like his “Underemployed” characters.

Recent credits include the pic “Rock of Ages” as well as TV’s “Pretty Little Liars” and “90210.” He also has signed with Adam Levine’s 222 Records to work on his third album.

As for “Underemployed,” which debuts Oct. 16, Boneta believes the series is about more than simply documenting the job challenges faced by many of today’s twentysomethings.

“At the end of the day, the most important thing is sharing your failures and successes with the people who are closest to you,” he says. “None of that matters if you don’t have your family or friends. That’s the core of the show.”
