NBC renews 3 comedies, axes 4 bubble shows

'Whitney,' 'All Night' get reprieve; 'Awake' among casualties

NBC has given a full fifth-season order to “Parks and Recreation” and second season orders to “Up All Night” and “Whitney.”

Also getting a last-minute series order is Lionsgate TV’s Dane Cook starrer “Next Caller,” which nabbed six segs for midseason. Comic plays a brash radio DJ who has a show with a feminist co-host. “Caller” was penned by Stephen Falk and helmed by Marc Buckland.

“Parks and Rec” is among the few NBC comedies to land a 22-episode order. Peacock has been given 13-seg pickups to most returning shows, probably in an effort to give it flexibility in skedding more original series throughout the season.

The high volume of comedy renewals and pilot pickups indicates the Peacock is looking to enhance its laff lineup in the coming season. “Parks,” “Up All Night” and “Whitney” three shows hail from Universal TV.

“Whitney” is in the market for a new showrunner as exec producer Betsy Thomas is not expected to return to the helm.

As expected, NBC gave the ax to dramas “Awake” and “Harry’s Law” and frosh comedies “Are You There Chelsea,” “Bent” and “BFF.”

“Harry’s Law” reps an interesting situation for NBC. The show, starring Kathy Bates as a quirky lawyer, is the Peacock’s most-watched scripted drama in total viewers but has precious little traction in the adults 18-49 demo that is key to NBC.
