Latenight helmers set themselves apart

Road to the Emmys 2012: The Director Nominees - Variety

James Hoskinson
“The Colbert Report” (Comedy Central)
Highlight: Colbert took advantage of an hourlong appearance with rockers Radiohead to poke fun at the group’s anti-corporate stance by interviewing with a Dr Pepper “Flavor Zone” banner directly behind his head.
Sidelight: Colbert introduces a sarcastic “hipster” medic to aid any Radiohead fans who “totally lose their shit,” while getting singer Thom Yorke to admit he doesn’t measure up to U2’s Bono at saving the world.

Chuck O’Neil
“The Daily Show” (Comedy Central)
Highlight: A sketch lampooning media oversaturation in which all six of the show’s “correspondents” race to the bottom in an attempt to cash in on covering the Florida trial of George Zimmerman.
Sidelight: A satisfyingly robust and visually engaging musical performance from Esperanza Spalding, who also gives host Jon Stewart a lesson in playing the air bass.

Jerry Foley
“Late Show with David Letterman” (CBS)
Highlight: Letterman and actor Jay Thomas take turns throwing footballs at a large Christmas tree as they try to knock off a pizza and a giant meatball mounted on the top bow.
Sidelight: For the annual Christmas show, rocker Darlene Love performed the classic “Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home)” with the CBS Orchestra and a choir.

Jonathan Krisel
“Portlandia” (IFC)
Highlight: Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein’s turn as a couple that becomes so obsessed with watching “Battlestar Galactica,” they lose their jobs and house and track down a local man who shares the same name as “Battlestar” creator Ronald D. Moore and plead with him to write another episode.
Sidelight: Appearances by “Battlestar” cast members Edward James Olmos and James Callis, as well as a cameo by the real Ronald D. Moore, who says he’s “never seen the show.”

Don Roy King
“Saturday Night Live” (NBC)
Highlight: Watching Mick Jagger mock himself by playing an office worker who’s completely unimpressed by his co-workers’ karaoke and dance impressions of himself. Also, a touching farewell for departing cast members Kristen Wiig and Andy Samberg.
Sidelight: Guest appearances by Jon Hamm in the opener, and Steve Martin during an installment of “The Californians” for which the cast was barely able to contain itself.
