Rob Legato, visual effects supervisor on “Hugo,” had worked with Martin Scorsese on five previous films, but “Hugo” was the first where vfx were at the forefront.

“This was the first one where we had a lot of (vfx) shots in the film, and it was also the first time it felt like we were working with a larger-than-life experience,” he says. “In terms of the 3D, when we talked about every shot, we talked about how each shot could enhance that 3D technology, so (the focus) was not only how to shoot it in 3D but how we could help the 3D as well.”
