It’s a family affair this year at the American Theater Wing’s annual gala: The fundraising event will honor those members of the Redgrave family who have worked in the theater.
Which, as we all know, is a lot of them. Actors include Michael Redgrave, Rachel Kempson, Vanessa Redgrave, Lynn Redgrave, Corin Redgrave, Natasha Richardson, Liam Neeson, Franco Nero, Joely Richardson and Jemma Redgrave. Director Carlo Nero and photographer Annabel Clark also get their own boughs on the family tree.
The clan seemed an obvious choice for the Wing honor, according to the org’s exec director Heather Hitchens. “I don’t know of another family with six generations of actors in it,” she marveled. Vanessa Redgrave will attend along with other members of her family.
The event, set for Sept. 24 at the Plaza, also will honor a member of the Wing’s own family: Rodgers and Hammerstein exec director Theodore S. Chapin, who was the board chair of the Wing for four years (the maximum number of consecutive years that one person is allowed to stick around in that post).
Coin drummed up by the gala will go to support the Wing’s education and pro development initiatives, including TV series “Working in the Theater” and Springboard NYC, the summer boot camp for young actors.
Hitchens wouldn’t go into too many details about the performance element of the gala. “But I can tell you that it’ll be short but high quality,” she said.
