Even a controversy fomented by Stephen Sondheim couldn’t stop “The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess” from opening on Broadway. Reviews the next day were all over the map, but Thursday’s opening night crowd at the Richard Rodgers Theater gave it a hearty thumbs-up. And that includes some aud members who are notoriously hard to please.
Take Spike Lee, one of the well-wishers to congratulate scribe Suzan-Lori Parks, who wrote the show’s new book.
“Spike likes it!” she cried happily just after their intermission tete-a-tete. “I wrote a film for him” — that’d be the 1996 pic “Girl 6” — “and he never just says he likes it!”
