Four girls to make Broadway debuts in ‘Matilda’

Royal Shakespeare Company teams with Dodger Properties on musical

The Royal Shakespeare Company announced Wednesday that four girls will share the lead in Broadway-bound “Matilda The Musical” based on Roald Dahl’s classic book.

Sophia Gennusa, Oona Laurence, Bailey Ryon and Milly Shapiro will play the role in different performances, all making their Broadway debuts. Performances start March 4 and show opens April 11 at the Shubert Theatre.

Bertie Carvel will reprise the role of Miss Trunchbull.

Gennusa has appeared in the last six productions of “The Nutcracker” at Purchase College Conservatory of Dance and recently played Puck at the Young Bard’s summer camp production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

Laurence has been in graduate films and on stage in both dramatic roles and comedies.

Ryon is a member of the Repertory Dance Ensemble, the Black Box Players and a lead vocalists in rock band the Blackjacks. She’s been seen in the Fulton Opera House’s “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” and as Cindy-Lou Who in the 2011 national tour of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical.”

Shapiro’s previous professional roles include Annie, Young Cossette and Baby June.

Matilda was commissioned by the RSC in 2010 and received seven 2012 Olivier Awards including Best Musical and a joint Best Actress Award for the four girls who shared the title role. It’s directed by Matthew Warchus with book by playwright Dennis Kelly and music and lyrics by Tim Minchin.

For Broadway, the RSC is teaming with New York’s Dodger Properties.
