Death row play ‘Exonerated’ returns for 10th anni run

Culture Project lines up stars for Off Broadway staging

Off Broadway docu-play “The Exonerated” will return to Gotham for a 10th anniversary victory lap that will feature a rotating cast of stars to include Brian Dennehy, Stockard Channing and Brooke Shields.

The play by Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen — with a text assembled from interviews, letters, transcripts and other records — bowed at the Culture Project’s Off Broadway space in 2002 and ran there for about 18 months. Show focuses on six real-life death row inmates whose convictions were overturned — including Sunny Jacobs, who will appear alongside the cast for one week of the latest staging’s run.

Original director Bob Balaban returns to direct. John Forte, the musician whose conviction for drug trafficking was commuted in 2008, also will appear in the cast, with further performers still to be announced.

The return run of “The Exonerated” begins previews Sept. 15 ahead of a Sept. 19 opening at 45 Bleecker Street, the same downtown venue where the production bowed in 2002.
