Cast gets ‘Lucky’ with Hanks on Broadway

Scolari, Masur among actors joining play

Peter Scolari, Christopher McDonald, Richard Masur, Stephen Tyrone Williams and Danny Mastrogiorgio are among the thesps lined up to appear alongside Tom Hanks in his upcoming Broadway debut in Nora Ephron’s “Lucky Guy.”

Williams, seen this year in Off Broadway plays “My Children! My Africa!” and “Harper Regan,” will play Abner Louima in the play about reporter Mike McAlary (Hanks), the Gotham journo whose career included coverage of the NYPD brutalization of Louima in 1997. Scolari, Masur and Mastrogiorgio — the last currently on Broadway in the much-lauded “Golden Boy” — play fellow journalist types, as do Peter Gerety and Michael Gaston. McDonald is onboard as Gotham lawyer Eddie Hayes, with Deirdre Lovejoy and Dustyn Gulledge also among the cast.

A few more actors remain to be set for the production, helmed by George C. Wolfe (“Angels in America,” “The Normal Heart”). Creative team for “Lucky Guy” will include David Rockwell (sets), Toni-Leslie James (costumes), Scott Lehrer (sound) and Jules Fisher and Peggy Eisenhauer (lights).

Show begins previews March 1 ahead of an April 1 opening at the Broadhurst Theater.

Anyone who doesn’t have a cottage on the Cape or the Islands, as they say in Massachusetts, might be puzzled by the title of John Guare’s new play.  “Nantucket Sleigh Ride” is no Revere Beach amusement park ride, but an old whaling term for the death throes of a whale that is still attached to [...]

No, Kate doesn’t get spanked. And for those wondering how the dicey ending of “Kiss Me, Kate” — that musical mashup of “The Taming of the Shrew” and backstage battling exes — would come across in these more sensitive times, well, that’s also been reconsidered for the Roundabout Theatre Company’s Broadway revival of the Cole [...]

West End Review: Tom Hiddleston in 'Betrayal'

It takes three to tango, and Jamie Lloyd’s “Betrayal” completely grasps that. Having made it his mission to modernize the way we stage Harold Pinter’s plays, his chic, stripped-down staging starring Tom Hiddleston as a cuckolded husband might be his best attempt yet. Pared back and played out on an empty stage, this masterful play [...]
