Actors’ Equity Assn., the union for legit thesps and stage managers, has tapped Thomas Carpenter as its new Eastern regional director, assistant exec director and regional counsel.

He starts his new gig at Equity Aug. 27, ankling his current post as SAG-AFTRA’s assistant national exec director and chief labor counsel.

Carpenter’s duties will include oversight of the operations, collective bargaining and contracts for the Eastern region, one of three geographically divided subsets of Equity. He’ll also lead the org’s Gotham and Orlando staffs as well as its public policy staff. As general counsel, he’ll have a major role in arbitrations and in the management of relations with external legal counsel for labor matters.

Prior to the merger of SAG and AFTRA, Carpenter had served as AFTRA’s general counsel and director of legislative affairs, as well as chief negotiator for national collective bargaining. Before that he was legal counsel for Teamsters Local 705 in Chicago.
