Steven Zaillian’s Film Rites & Martin Scorsese’s Sikelia are teaming to produce a docu on film critic Roger Ebert.

Based on Ebert’s memoir, “Life Itself,” the documentary will be helmed by Steve James and produced by Film Rites’ Garrett Basch. Scorsese and Zaillian exec produce.

The memoir covered Ebert’s struggle with and recovery from alcoholism; his battle with thyroid cancer that left him unable to eat, drink or speak; his marriage; his politics; and his spiritual beliefs.

Zaillian and Scorsese last worked together on “Gangs of New York,” with Zaillian writing and Scorsese directing. “Hoop Dreams” helmer James most recently directed “Head Games” and “The Interrupters.”
