Well Go USA has acquired all North American rights to Dong-hoo Choi’s heist actioner “The Thieves” from Showbox/Mediaplex Inc. two weeks after its North American premiere at the Toronto Film Festival.

“Thieves” has been set for a theatrical release on Oct. 12.

Film stars Yun-seok Kim, Hye-soo Kim, Jung-jae Lee, Gianna Jun, Simon Yam, Hae-sook Kim, Dal-soo Oh and Angelica Lee. “Thieves” has grossed over $82 million in South Korea to become the biggest grosser ever in that market.

Story centers on a Korean master criminal and his crew who join his treacherous former partner in Hong Kong to steal a $20 million yellow diamond from a casino.

Maggie Lee gave “Thieves” a positive notice in her review for Variety: “Much could have gone wrong with this multilingual, country-hopping crowdpleaser, but helmer Choi Dong-hoon plays his cards right in terms of spectacle, drama and character bonhomie.”

It’s the second TIFF pickup for Well Go USA, which reached a deal to distribute the Mandarin-language version of “Dangerous Liaisons” in the U.S., acquiring Korean helmer Hur Jin-ho’s take on the 18th-century French classic just days ahead of its North American preem.

Deal for “Thieves” was brokered between Doris Pfardrescher of Well Go USA and Judy Ahn of Showbox/Mediaplex.
