Variety has named Jon Weisman to the position of awards editor.
Weisman will take a lead role in the year-round coverage by Variety of major awards events such as the Oscars and Emmys, as well as their sponsoring organizations. That coverage will include the editing and reporting of day-to-day news, features and analysis, as well as posts at Variety blog the Vote.
“As we beefed up our editorial staff this past year, we realized the need for an awards editor, and Jon is perfect for the job,” said Variety editor-in-chief Tim Gray. “He’s played a key role in past awards coverage and his work as reporter and VPlus editor have given him a perspective on how kudos fit into the industry’s big picture. Plus, he is liked and respected both internally and within the entertainment community.”
Weisman started writing for Variety in 2004 and has been a full-time presence since 2006, serving as associate editor of features and television reporter. He began his journalism career in 1985 and continues to write the widely read Dodger Thoughts blog. He has also had more than a dozen scripts for live-action and animated children’s shows produced.
