Universal eyes Jake Kasdan’s ‘My Spy’

Pic was in turnaround from CBS Films

Universal Pictures is in preliminary negotiations to acquire action comedy script “My Spy” out of turnaround from CBS Films with Jake Kasdan attached to direct.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura is producing along with David Ready and Mark Vahradian. Kasdan and his brother Jon will rewrite the screenplay based on early drafts from Jeremy Slater and Michael Diliberti.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, but sources tell Variety it is in the vein of “Risky Business” and “Weird Science.”

Universal exec VP of production Scott Bernstein will oversee the project for Universal.

The project was at CBS Films but was put into turnaround when the studio was unable to find the right director.

Universal had been considering the project for some time but was also waiting to find the right director.

WME-repped Jake Kasdan is also attached to direct Sony and Escape Artists’ “Sex Tape,” but may make “My Spy” his next film, as “Sex Tape” is still in development with casting still in discussion.

Jon Kasdan is also repped by WME. Di Bonaventura is repped by CAA and Bloom, Hergott, Diemer, Rosenthal, LaViolette, Feldman, Schenkman & Goodman.
