U.K.’s Network Releasing nabs ‘Out in the Dark’

Israeli romantic drama world premieres in Toronto

LONDON

Israeli romantic drama “Out in the Dark” has sold to the U.K.’s Network Releasing ahead of its world premiere in the Discovery Section of the Toronto Film Festival on Sept. 7.

M-appeal is handling worldwide sales on U.S.-Israeli filmmaker Michael Mayer’s debut feature. It is a politically charged love story between an Israeli lawyer (Michael Aloni) and a Palestinian student (Nicholas Jacob).

Network Releasing plans a theatrical release in the U.K. and Ireland for spring/summer 2013. The film has already sold to Outplay in France and Pro-Fun for Germany, Austria and Switzerland following a market screening at Cannes in May.

M-appeal’s Maren Kroyman negotiated the deal with Network Releasing’s Tim Beddows.

Kroyman said, “This is a tough market for foreign-language films and ‘Out in the Dark’ is among the few Israeli films to be released in U.K. cinemas.”

” ‘Out in the Dark’ is an impressive debut by Michael Mayer and addresses some vital and very current issues,” said Beddows.

“Out in the Dark” is co-produced by L.A.-based M7200 Prods. and Periscope Prods. in Tel Aviv, with support from the Israel Film Fund and Israel Channel 10.

It is one of three Toronto titles M-appeal represents, alongside black comedy “The Deflowering of Eva Van End,” by Dutch newcomer Michiel ten Horn, which world preems at the fest, and Julio Hernandez Cordon’s “Polvo,” set during the Guatemalan civil war, which sees its North American premiere at the fest following a world premiere at the Locarno fest in August.
