U.K.’s Channel 4 to play ‘Nashville’

Country music drama to air on More 4 channel

CANNES — U.K. web Channel 4 has acquired exclusive local rights to “Nashville” from Lionsgate Television.

The show, which makes its Stateside debut on ABC on Wednesday, is created by Callie Khouri who also produces with R.J. Cutler, Dee Johnson, Steve Buchanan and Connie Britton.

The series stars Connie Britton as Rayna James, a country music superstar whose star is beginning to fade, and Hayden Panettiere (“Heroes”) as rising teen star Juliette Barnes.

In Blighty “Nashville” will air on Channel 4’s upscale More 4 channel.

Channel 4 was once an undisputed leader in showcasing U.S. shows, but of late paybox BSkyB has eclipsed it, with Sky Atlantic signing an exclusive deal with HBO, once a big supplier to the terrestrial free-to-air web.

“Nashville” is one of several new shows being sold by Lionsgate at Mipcom.
