Tribeca, Focus pick up ‘Tim Buckley’

Dan Algrant's film to be released next year in U.S.

Tribeca Film and Focus World have partnered to acquire U.S. rights to “Greetings From Tim Buckley” three months after its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival.

“Buckley” is directed by Dan Algrant (“People I Know”) and co-written by Emma Sheanshang, David Brendel and Algrant. Penn Badgley stars along with Imogen Poots and Ben Rosenfield.

Producers are John N. Hart, Patrick Milling Smith, Frederick Zollo and Amy Nauiokas. Brian Carmody, Jill Footlick and Ben Limberg exec produced.

Story is set in 1991 with Jeff Buckley rehearsing for his public singing debut at a Brooklyn tribute show for his father, the late folk singer Tim Buckley. The film also explores Tim Buckley’s 1960s heyday as he drives cross-country with a girlfriend and finds himself on the verge of stardom.

Tribeca Film and Focus World will release the film next year with a platform theatrical rollout as well on VOD.

In his Variety review at TIFF Dennis Harvey called the film “A snapshot of two prodigiously gifted, tragically short-lived artists” that “dramatizes formative career moments in the lives of the titular 1960s folk icon as well as ’90s rock star Jeff Buckley, who never really knew his long-gone father. Dan Algrant’s well-crafted third feature focuses primarily on the younger musician, who’s strikingly if somewhat off-puttingly portrayed as a petulant man-boy acting out his Oedipal issues in bratty self-absorption.”

The deal was negotiated for Tribeca Film by Nick Savva; for Focus by Avy Eschenasy; and for the filmmakers by CAA and Hengameh Panahi of Celluloid Dreams.
