“Taken 2” dominates overseas

International cume jumps to $134.8 mil

Fox’s actioner “Taken 2” won overseas bragging rights for the second consecutive weekend, absconding with $45.1 million over the Oct. 12-14 sesh to lift its international cume to a muscular $134.8 million.

Fox has launched the film in 35 territories, with top two-week results coming from the U.K. (a cume of $23.4 million), followed by South Korea ($14.8 million) and Australia ($13.6 million). The pic’s been released in 28 other territories via local distribs, contributing $47.5 million of its offshore gross.

Taken 2’s” overseas domination follows the original’s sleeper-hit status in 2010. Still, the sequel figures to be overtaken by the day-and-date bow of “Paranormal Activity 4,” which began Oct. 17 in 34 markets.

Still, additional coin for “Taken 2” is mostly gravy. With a worldwide take approaching $225 million (including $89 million and counting domestically), the $45 million sequel is just a shade away from eclipsing its predecessor (a global $226 million).

Other films making headlines overseas included tsunami disaster pic “The Impossible,” which scored the highest-ever opening in Spain, with $13.3 million (including sneaks) via Warner Bros. Intl. “Impossible” will bow Stateside Dec. 21 through Summit.

Universal’s “Ted,” meanwhile, became the highest-grossing original R-rated comedy worldwide, reaching $470 million, to surpass Warner Bros.’ “The Hangover” ($467.5 million). “Ted” has performed in the top five internationally consistently for four months, thanks to a steady overseas rollout. U most recently expanded the laffer to France, where it nabbed $3 million, for a solid second-place opening in the territory (American comedies typically see far less in Gaul).

“Ted” rounds out its overseas run in Malaysia, India, Venezuela and Japan.
