New Line has greenlit found-footage tornado project “Category Six” and will start shooting July 9 in Detroit. Studio began developing the project last fall when it bought John Swetnam’s script and set it up with Todd Garner at his Broken Road banner.
Story is presented through video cameras and cell phones and centers on high schoolers who try to survive a Category 6 tornado — the worst in U.S. history.
Steven Quale — a longtime associate of James Cameron — signed on earlier this year to direct “Category Six” in his second gig for New Line following “Final Destination 5.” Quale was second-unit director and visual effects supervisor on “Avatar” and second-unit director on “Titanic.”
