Shooting Stars set to illuminate Berlinale

Showcase fetes young European talent

BERLIN — Danish actor Mikkel Boe Folsgaard, who won a Silver Bear at this year’s Berlin Film Festival for his portrayal of a deranged king in Danish Oscar entry “A Royal Affair,” is among European Film Promotion’s 2013 Shooting Stars.

The 10 young thesps will be feted at the upcoming Berlinale during a three-day event running Feb. 9-11 that includes interviews with international casting directors, a press conference, photo shoots, a workshop and a glitzy awards ceremony.

Describing Folsgaard’s work in Nikolaj Arcel’s historical drama as “simply breathtaking,” the Shooting Stars jury said, “Seeing him in ‘A Royal Affair,’ one instantly knows that he can play any part … We never see him creating emotions, they are just there, like a miracle.”

Also making this year’s list were Germany’s Saskia Rosendahl, who impressed with “a phenomenal debut performance” in Cate Shortland’s World War II-era drama “Lore,” Australia’s foreign Oscar candidate; Finland’s Laura Birn, who starred in Antti Jokinen’s “Purge”; France’s Christa Theret (“Renoir”); and Italy’s Luca Marinelli (“Every Blessed Day”).

Kosovo’s Arta Dobroshi dazzled the jury with “warmth and humanity” and an “overwhelming performance” in Catherine Corsini’s French drama “Three Worlds.”

Likewise selected were Romania’s Ada Condeescu (“Wolf”); Jure Henigman (“Feed Me With Your Words”) of Slovenia; Sweden’s Nermina Lukac (“Eat Sleep Die”); and Switzerland’s Carla Juri (“Someone Like Me”).

The Shooting Stars jury includes German producer Bettina Brokemper, French journalist Thierry Cheze, British casting director Jina Jay, Italian actress Alba Rohrwacher and filmmaker Jasmila Zbanic of Bosnia-Herzegovina.
