BUDAPEST — Robert Lantos’ Serendipity Point Films has boarded Hungarian historical epic “Hunyadi,” based on local scribe Ban Mor’s bestsellers.
Hungary’s Hollosgyuru is producing the pic about the life of Janos Hunyadi, a general and nobleman who defended Hungary from invasion by the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century.
According to exec producer Cecilia Hazai, the pageantry of Mor’s novels, which include iconic characters such as Vlad Dracul (on whom Dracula was based) and epic battles, cater to audiences of dramas such as “Game of Thrones.”
“We think ‘Hunyadi’ will perform well, based on the trend of big historical pieces, and the amazing success of Mor’s books,” said Hazai.
Mor is writing the screenplay with Erika Szanto.
Mark Musselman will exec produce for Canada’s Serendipity Point. With a budget estimated at between $25 million to $30 million, the production is also backed by Hungary’s Twin Media while Hollosgyuru will tap the Hungarian Film Fund.
