Eric Roberts and Mark Povinelli have signed on as the male leads in the Susan Seidelman-helmed basketball comedy “The Hot Flashes,” starring Brooke Shields, Daryl Hannah, Melanie Griffith, Wanda Sykes and Camryn Manheim.
Principal photography began Monday in New Orleans. Film is being produced by Nina Henderson Moore, Brad Hennig and Seidelman, with Laurie Lacob exec producing.
“The Hot Flashes,” penned by Hennig, centers on an unlikely team of unappreciated middle-aged Texas women, all former high school champs, who challenge the current arrogant high school girls’ state champs to raise money for breast cancer prevention.
Roberts will play the estranged husband of the lead character portrayed by Shields; Povinelli will be the team’s cranky coach.
Shields plays the Hot Flashes’ team captain while Hannah portrays a closeted lesbian struggling to cope in the small Texas town. Griffith portrays a five-time divorcee who joins the team in order to get even with one of her ex-husbands, the head coach of the opposing team. Sykes is the mayor and only African-American in the small Texas town; Manheim is an an overweight teammate with a taste for cannabis-laced desserts.
