Deal, announced Monday at the Sundance Film Festival, covers films under the newly created Kevin Smith and Smodcast Pictures Presents label. Phase 4 will release four of these films theatrically each year, including a live tour with Smith similar to his “Red State” outing.
The other titles in partnership will be released via other traditional and digital platforms. Phase 4 and Smith said they’ll consider movies from all budget levels to release under the label.
Titles will be promoted via Smith’s Twitter account, which has almost 2 million followers, and through Facebook, where Smith has nearly 700,000 Facebook friends.
Smith’s “Red State,” a horror-thriller starring Melissa Leo and John Goodman, debuted at last year’s Sundance Film Festival with Smith opting to end studio bidding by buying his own film for $20 and announcing he would be self-distribute. It cumed $1.1 million last year.
“I had the most fun I’ve ever had in my entire career touring ‘Red State’ last year,” Smith said. “Watching the movie with an enthusiastic audience and then doing a longer Q&A than the flick itself, jumping on the tour bus and waking up in another city where we’d do it all over again — it felt less like boring ol’ film exhibition and more like punk rock. We learned (and made) lots touring ‘Red State,’ so now, Smodcast Pictures wants to put that experience to good use for other films and filmmakers on smaller road shows for their flicks.”
Phase 4 handled the Canadian release of “Red State.”
