James Bobin is making the transition from Muppets to moles, as “The Muppets” helmer is onboard to direct espionage story “Agent Zigzag” for New Line and Playtone Pictures.

Script is based on the Ben Macintyre novel that revolves around the true story of Eddie Chapman, a professional criminal who won the trust of German intelligence services during WWII even as he reported back to the spymasters of Britain’s MI5.

Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman and Merideth Finn will produce through Playtone. Cue the Dog Productions is also producing; Mark Bomback adapted the novel and Rowan Joffe did the most recent re-write of the script. It is unclear whether “Agent Zigzag” would be Bobin’s next project. He is already attached to do a sequel to “The Muppets” movie, but it is unclear where that film stands in development. “Agent Zigzag” has been in development for some time, with Mike Newell onboard to direct at one point.

The project will mark something new for a director known more for his comedy credits. Besides “The Muppets,” Bobin has also helmed episodes of “Da Ali G Show” and “Flight of the Conchords.”

He is repped by CAA.
