Munich fetes Fassbinder

Fest presenting film showcase

BERLIN — The 30th Munich Film Festival is commemorating the 30th anniversary of the death of Rainer Werner Fassbinder with a special tribute this year.

The fest, which runs June 29-July 7, will celebrate Fassbinder with a showcase of eight films by and about the German filmmaker, including such 1970s works as “Mother Kuesters Goes to Heaven,” “Despair,” “In a Year with 13 Moons” and “The Third Generation,” as well as 1981’s “Lola.” Also screening is Daniel Schmid’s 1975 “Shadow of Angels,” an adaptation of Fassbinder’s play “The Garbage, the City and Death.”

Actress Ingrid Caven, who was married to Fassbinder from 1970 to 1972 and who appeared in more than 30 of his films and stage productions, will be a guest of honor at the event. Also on hand for the celebration will be actor Udo Kier, a longtime friend of the filmmaker, and director Todd Haynes, who is being feted this year with a retrospective.

Haynes will present a recently restored version of “Despair,” an adaptation of Vladimir Nabokov’s novel.

Fassbinder’s tumultuous life is also the subject of “Rainer,” a film in development by director Marco Kreuzpaintner and Anatol Nitschke of Berlin-based Deutschfilm.

Fassbinder died of drug-induced heart failure on June 10, 1982, at the age of 37.
