“Hatfields & McCoys” star Max Deacon has come on board New Line’s found-footage tornado project opposite Arlen Escarpeta, Jeremy Sumpter, Alycia Debnam-Carey and Nathan Kress.

Steven Quale, a longtime associate of James Cameron, is directing the tornado pic (formerly titled “Category Six”) in his second gig for New Line following “Final Destination 5.” Shooting starts July 23 in Michigan.

Simon Beaufoy has rewritten the script for the project, which launched last fall when New Line bought John Swetnam’s script and set it up with Todd Garner at his Broken Road banner. Story, presented through videocameras and cellphones, follows inhabitants of a small town in Oklahoma and a stormchaser and his crew when a tornado super cell touches down.

Deacon will play an introverted teen with a crush on the high school’s prettiest girl. He played Calvin McCoy in the History miniseries.

Deacon is repped by UTA and by Ness Evans and Tor Belfrage at Julian Belfrage Associates in the U.K.
