Judd Apatow for ‘This is 40’

Eye on the Oscars: The Director

Revisiting the stressed-out parents Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann played in “Knocked Up,” Apatow debated how to deliver the laughs while dealing with such unfunny issues as midlife crises, parenting and marital discord. In a stab at authenticity, Apatow cast not only real-life wife Mann, but also their daughters, Maude and Iris, and incorporated material from the cast’s own experience. “Working (with Apatow) is always very collaborative, and bits of yourself turn up in the role,” says Rudd.
