John Madden to helm ‘Murder Mystery’

Charlize Theron in talks to star in indie

John Madden will direct the indie action-comedy “Murder Mystery,” with Charlize Theron in talks to star.

James Vanderbilt is penning the screenplay, and producers are eyeing a first quarter start date.

Tripp Vinson, Beau Flynn and Vanderbilt are producing along with Endgame Entertainment’s James D. Stern, Tower Hill’s William Shively and Theron via her Denver and Delilah Prods. banner. Endgame Entertainment and Tower Hill Entertainment are financing.

Endgame prexy of production Julie Goldstein has previously worked with Madden and will oversee production with Lucas Smith. Endgame’s Doug E. Hansen exec produces.

Paying homage to Agatha Christie-style thrillers, it’s set in Mediterranean Europe.

Madden is coming off directing “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” for Fox Searchlight.

Madden is repped by CAA, Casarotto Ramsay & Associates and Bloom Hergott. Vanderbilt is repped by WME, Ufuse and McKuin Frankel Whitehead. Theron is repped by WME and Hansen, Jacobson.
