Nostalgia and videogames look to be a potent combo for studios as Universal is bringing on Jez Butterworth to rewrite the script of “Asteroids.”
The framework of the story is still unknown, but the material is based on the classic Atari arcade videogame. Earlier drafts of the screenplay were written by Matt Lopez and Evan Spiliotopoulos.
Lorenzo di Bonaventura is producing the pic. VP of production, Anikah McLaren will oversee the project for Universal.
Videogame adaptations heating up again with adaptations of “Assassins’ Creed,” “Splinter Cell” and “Gears of War” seeing pre-production action.
The CAA-repped Butterworth has several projects in development including the untitled James Brown biopic that Tate Taylor is directing.
