“American Idol” finalist Kevin Covais is set to join Jason Bateman, Melissa McCarthy and Amanda Peet in Seth Gordon’s Universal comedy “Identity Thief.”
Bateman will play a man whose life falls apart after his identity is stolen. When he corners the perpetrator (McCarthy), he gets a wake-up call he wasn’t expecting.
Covais will play an Eagle Scout whose identity has also been stolen, prompting him to seek revenge.
Scott Stuber and Pamela Abdy are producing through the former’s U-based Bluegrass Films banner, along with Bateman, while Peter Morgan will exec produce. Craig Mazin (“The Hangover Part II”) rewrote Steve Conrad’s initial draft of the script. Exec VP of production Scott Bernstein will oversee the project for Universal.

Covais, who made his bigscreen debut in the 2008 MGM comedy “College,” appears alongside Kurt Russell in the upcoming football pic “Touchback.” Thesp will soon be seen in Sony tentpole “Men in Black 3.”
