‘Grave of the Fireflies’ anniversary release planned

Toon will screen as part of Studio Ghibli Retrospective tour

Gkids has acquired North American theatrical rights to the 1988 animated movie “Grave of the Fireflies” via a distribution agreement with Japan’s Toho Co. Ltd.

The company’s planning a 25th anniversary release for the United States. The film will also play as part of the Studio Ghibli Retrospective that’s currently touring throughout North America.

“Grave” was written and directed by Studio Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahata. Story is told in flashback about the devastation of Japan during the final months of WWII as seen through the eyes of two children.

Gkids and Studio Ghibli had announced a 13-picture deal last year for North American theatrical rights to 13 Studio Ghibli titles, including Hayao Miyazaki’s “Spirited Away,” “My Neighbor Totoro” and “Princess Mononoke.” GKids announced the acquisition of Miyazaki’s “Up on Poppy Hill” in June at France’s Annecy Animation Film Festival, disclosing plans to for a qualifying Oscar run and a March release.

GKids titles “A Cat in Paris” and “Chico and Rita” received Oscar nominations this year.
