Costner running toward ‘McFarland’

Actor would star in Disney, Mayhem track team drama

Sports movie stalwart Kevin Costner is in final negotiations to star in Disney and Mayhem Pictures’ track team drama “McFarland.”

Niki Caro (“Whale Rider”) is directing from a script she wrote with Grant Thompson.

Described as a cross between “Remember the Titans” and “Coach Carter,” project is based on the true story of high school coach who comes to the predominantly poor, Latino town of McFarland, Calif. and creates a cross-country team that becomes a championship-winning dynasty. Costner is making a deal to play the coach.

Mark Ciardi and Gordon Gray are producing for Mayhem, which has produced similar inspirational sports pics such as “Miracle,” “Invincible” and “Secretariat.” Disney has been developing “McFarland” since 2004.

Costner previously toplined successful sports pics such as “Field of Dreams,” “Bull Durham,” “Tin Cup” and “For the Love of the Game.” Thesp recently starred in the History Channel miniseries “Hatfields & McCoys,” will soon be seen playing Jonathan Kent in Zack Snyder’s Superman pic “Man of Steel.”
