Black Forest wades into ‘Black River’

Bestselling author's spec script a psychological thriller

Black Forest Film Group has acquired the spec script “Black River,” a psychological thriller from Ransom Riggs, the author of New York Times bestseller “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.”

Black Forest’s founding partners Mark Morgan (“The Twilight Saga”), Kami Garcia (“Beautiful Creatures”), E. Thompson (“Rites of Spring”) and Brett Hudson (“Black Forest: Hansel and Gretel & the 420 Witch”) will produce the pic, which Riggs will co-exec produce.

“Black River” follows a small-town girl who has been haunted by a dead girl’s spirit ever since her own near-fatal accident. When she goes off to college and her friends begin to die, she must uncover the dark secret of the dead girl’s fate.

Deal was brokered by Riggs’ reps Mikhail Nayfeld, Markus Goerg and Dick Hillenbrand at Heroes and Villains Entertainment, as well as Paradigm agent David Boxerbaum and attorney Matt Wallerstein.

20th Century Fox and Chernin Entertainment are developing a feature adaptation of Riggs’ debut novel “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,” which Tim Burton is attached to direct from a script by Jane Goldman (“X-Men: First Class”). In addition to finishing the highly anticipated sequel to “Miss Peregrine’s,” Riggs has sold his next book series, “Arcanum,” to Little, Brown Books.
