BBC Worldwide Prods. has picked up a retelling of Sergei Prokofiev’s children’s classic “Peter and the Wolf,” that it will produce with Adrian Askarieh.
Project is early in development. No format has been agreed upon yet.
Paul Busenitz penned the screenplay based on an idea by Askarieh that modernizes the tale as a teen thriller in the vein of “Disturbia.” The duo have considered producing the project as a web series that could be packaged for distribution on other platforms.
Original story revolves around a boy who, with the help of a bird, outsmart a big bad wolf.
Deal comes as new takes on Snow White, Hansel & Gretal, Peter Pan and the Pied Piper are either hitting the screen or in development.
Askarieh also has set up “Leonardo Da Vinci and the Soldiers of Forever” at Warner Bros., that turns Italian icon into an action hero. He’s also behind a second “Hitman” pic, as well as adaptations of the “Just Cause” and “Kane & Lynch” videogames.
“I always wanted to get involved in the world of high-end live action serialized genre story telling for the web and the digital world,” Askarieh said. “This is a great opportunity to work with people at BBC who really know this format inside and out and also have tremendous enthusiasm for Paul’s great script.”
Askarieh and Busenitz will serve as executive producers, along with Deborah Read, as co-executive producer.
Dan Tischler, VP of digital content and business development is shepherding the project.
BBC Worldwide Prods.’ U.S. arm produces “Dancing With the Stars” for ABC, History Channel’s “Top Gear,” and is lensing historical fantasy “Da Vinci’s Demons” for Starz.
Askarieh and Busenitz are repped by Lichter Grossman Nichols and Adler, while the scribe also is repped by UTA and Madhouse Entertainment.
