Bakula boards HBO’s Liberace pic

Thesp re-teams with Damon, Soderbergh for 'Behind the Candelabra'

Scott Bakula is set to reteam with his “The Informant!” co-star Matt Damon and director Steven Soderbergh for HBO Films’ Liberace story “Behind the Candelabra.”

Michael Douglas stars as the famed performer, while Damon plays his live-in lover, Scott Thorson, whose memoir “My Life With Liberace” serves as the basis for the project. Dan Aykroyd and Debbie Reynolds recently signed on to co-star as Liberace’s long-time manager Seymour Heller and his mother, Frances Liberace, respectively.

Bakula is set to play Liberace’s friend Bob Black, the choreographer who introduced him to Thorson.

Richard LaGravenese wrote the script. Gregory Jacobs and Susan Ekins will produce, while Jerry Weintraub will exec produce.

After debuting on HBO, “Candelabra” will get a theatrical release outside the U.S. and Canada. Plan is for HBO Enterprises to sell the pic to independent distributors. Production is set to begin this summer.

Bakula, who recently starred on TNT’s “Men of a Certain Age,” just wrapped the last episodes of ABC’s “Desperate Housewives.” Thesp also stars alongside Nikki Reed and Gina Rodriguez in Youssef Delara and Victor Teran’s psychological thriller “Snap.”

Bakula is repped by ICM Partners.

    'My Zoe': Film Review

There are two films in Julie Delpy’s ambitious, sharply-made but unbalanced “My Zoe.” There’s the scabrous relationship melodrama, about bitter exes sharing custody of a beloved child, which contains the story’s most potent emotions. And there’s the sci-fi-inflected ethical-dilemma grief movie, which houses its most provocative ideas. Both have much to recommend them, not least [...]

For a man who was so enraged at the administration of Barack Obama that he spent his 2012 Republican Convention speech lecturing an empty chair, Clint Eastwood has made a number of conventional, level-headed — one might even say liberal — political dramas. 'Chez Jolie Coiffure': Film Review

Shortly before the credits roll on “Chez Jolie Coiffure,” a customer in the eponymous hair salon asks her stylist, Sabine, if she has any plans to go home this year. Out of context, this sounds like the kind of standard, empty small talk one often makes while having one’s hair cut: what good movies you’ve [...]
